A Favorite Activity!

I thought I would start out this blog with one of our favorite activities! Cooking or baking together. You must know that baking with a young child is going to be messy, but it is chock full of learning opportunities and good memories if you handle it well.

Some tips for a successful baking activity:

1. Choose a recipe that you can let you child or the children really be a part of, it should be simple, especially when you are first starting to bake together.

2. I like to talk about nutrition when we bake - even when we are baking a treat - it is such a great time to talk about balance in our diets.

3. Let your child touch and feel (as long as it is safe). They learn by doing.

4. Make sure they hear the measurements, and see the recipe. With older kids I will purposefully increase the amount of math that needs to be done, this is a perfect place to teach about fractions and their practical applications.

5. Don't cry over spilled "milk" - It WILL happen, expect it.

6. Most importantly: HAVE FUN!
